Awana Commander –
I am originally from southwest Pennsylvania. My parents divorced when I was seven and those next five years had a tremendous impact on who I wanted to be. I accepted Christ while in fourth grade and began memorizing scripture and reading the Bible all the way through. I believe the Lord gave me wisdom and discernment, shaping my belief system and setting goals for my future family. Even though there were bumps along the way during my high school years, I purposed to take many Bible college courses and read anything Christian about marriage and parenting (thank you Dr. Dobson!). Christian music shaped much of my theology in my teens and I am indebted to artists like Petra and Keith Green for helping me see who I was in Christ and what it meant to be his disciple.
Derek and I have been married for over 30 years. After his service in the navy we ended up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which wasn’t a bad consolation prize after leaving Southern California. We have six children, and three grandchildren. Being a stay-at-home mom and having the opportunity to homeschool our children has been a dream come true and I am forever thankful to my husband for working 70+ hours a week to make that happen.
I love reading and learning new things. Some of my lifetime companions have been: Kay Arthur, C.S. Lewis, Erwin McManus, Jane Austen, Elisabeth Elliott, A.W. Tozer, Timothy Keller, Paul Tripp, Gary Smalley, Lou Priollo, John Ortberg, and John Piper…to name a few. Thanks to the internet, I have an endless library of how-to’s and FYI’s that I use to help me try new things and live better.
I have had the pleasure of traveling to many fascinating and diverse locations such as: Italy, Japan, the Philippines, the Caribbean, and most recently, East Texas.
Serving in Awana has given me an opportunity to encourage families and children to build their lives on the truth of God’s word. Thank you CCF for making that a reality!!!! Now, if only there was a beach nearby…
